About

Rope is one of humanity’s oldest tools — primitive, utilitarian, and yet endlessly expressive. In the Japanese art of shibari and kinbaku, rope transcends function, becoming a medium for creativity, connection, and storytelling. Shibari is the technical craft of tying intricate, visually striking patterns, while kinbaku emphasizes the emotional and psychological connection between the person tying and the person being tied.

This figure drawing session invites artists of all backgrounds and skill levels to explore the unique beauty of the bound human form. Working from live models in evolving rope poses, participants will have the opportunity to capture the tension, fluidity, and intimate artistry that shibari creates. Each pose will offer a new challenge: the curve of a limb held in suspension, the intricate architecture of knots across the skin, the emotional landscape that rope can reveal.

Basic drawing supplies will be available, but artists are encouraged to bring their preferred materials if desired. No prior experience with rope or figure drawing is necessary — just a willingness to observe, create, and respect the art and the model.

The session will be guided by Isaiah Grey of Shibari Space LA
