About
Yoni steaming is a form of herbal medicine care that supports processing grief, connection with plant(cestors), lessens menstrual cramps, regulates menstruation cycles, fights infections and serves as non-hormonal birth control. Herbal steams are one of the most ancient practices on Earth, and steaming stories of different medicinal and spiritual usage are found globally (see this map of global stories).
This immersive yoni steaming ceremony is open to AFAB individuals across the gender spectrum, inviting all who wish to deepen their connection with ancestral womb care practices.
In this communal ritual, we’ll co-create an altar space, write letters to your womb, reflect in circle, learn about the history of yoni steaming, as well as get a full introduction to the process of steaming and the herbs we will commune with. Centering care and joy, you’ll be guided through a yoni steam with a combination of chosen intentions such as metabolising grief, releasing difficult emotion, grounding into love and connecting with plant(cestors), create your own herbal blend under our guidance, and experience a steam.
The ceremony will be facilitated by practitioner Mara Martinez-Hewitt (they/them), an imaginatrix, queer artist and community organizer who uses their imagination to work on art/land based healing justice, decolonizing therapy, land rematriation, popular education & pleasure activism.
Mara came to this practice 7 years ago upon receiving their PCOS diagnosis and after years of painful, irregular periods. They learned and practiced steaming within mostly Mesoamerican traditions as a mixed detribalized Native person, and have used it monthly since for their own womb care and in workshops to support community autonomy and gender-affirming ancestral forms of womb care. They are devoted to the ritual of this portal and love to share its magic with others, especially for their first time.
Ceremony Prep: Attendees are encouraged to wear a long skirt or dress and bring a large blanket to wrap around the legs. A bathroom will be available for changing. Please bring a journal, pen and a personal item to contribute to the altar.
It is not safe for those who are menstruating this date, who have an IUD or who are currently pregnant / seeking to become pregnant to steam. Connect with us for any further questions about if this space is right for you, logistics or access needs.
Note: Full price tickets include a clay pot for ongoing care at home. You’re more than welcome to bring your own pot (clay or wood) for a reduced ticket price, wrapping a towel around its rim to prevent burns.
