About
You are welcome to join our grief knitting circle. All those on a journey of grief are invited to come and share space with other grievers. Please note that this is not a group therapy session nor is it moderated by a mental health professional. This is a space built by someone experiencing grief for others experiencing grief. We are peers.
Working with your hands and your eyes at the same time, via knitting, may have beneficial effects on you during and after periods of intense trauma.
Grief can be trauma. The workshop begins by learning about different mechanisms of memory formation and how performing visuospatial tasks during traumatic periods can disrupt memory formation which in turn reduces or prevents symptoms of PTSD.
The workshop continues with learning the practice of knitting. Complete beginners are welcome and those of all skill levels are invited to join.
What to bring
You will be provided everything you need to make a wool scarf. If you are so inclined, please bring a small item for your loved one, a picture, a piece of jewelry, a talisman, that you may keep next to your yarn while you work. You are also invited to bring a journal.
A gift to you
All knitters will be gifted a unique ceramic knitting bowl made by the facilitator.
Scholarships
For those experiencing financial hardship, two spaces will be available for this workshop at no charge. (Both scholarships have been reserved as of 6/12/23)
grief is a house
where the chairs
have forgotten how to hold us
the mirrors how to reflect us
the walls how to contain us
